Requests from Housing Associations for Medical Information


The LMC is aware that GPs are sometimes asked for medical information to support applications for housing.  These requests sometimes arise because of conversations between patients and representatives from housing associations despite Durham Key Options (the umbrella organisation for local housing associations) not endorsing these requests or needing information from GPs.

The LMC suggests the following standard letter that practices can provide in response to such requests:

To whom it may concern:

I understand that you may want supporting medical evidence in relation to my patient’s housing application. County Durham And Darlington Local Medical Committee has advised that if Durham Key Options or any of its partner organisations consider that medical evidence is appropriate then a written request should be addressed to the patient’s GP together with the patient’s consent to provide information and an assurance that reasonable fees for providing a report will be met.
