Professional Fees and Non-NHS Services

One of the commonest questions that is asked of the LMC is if and what GPs can charge for their services.  Clearly the vast majority of what GPs do is carried out as part of their work for the NHS and fees cannot be charged.  However there are a number of services that GPs provide that do not form part of their NHS contract and these can attract a fee.

The BMA has very useful guidance on these matters and also provides a ready-reckoner to calculate your own fee.

The most useful advice is to agree a fee in writing before undertaking the work.

If GPs have questions on this issue then the LMC would be happy to provide guidance.
